My friend and I went to Tai Kwun to see an exhibition called HOPE by Patricia Piccinini today. I am so impressed by the artwork.
Seeing the exhibition, I was really amazed by her creativity and her way of expressing art. The sense of realness scared me and made me really started to think about what art means to me.
I am not going to spoil on the exhibition and I think that it has left me with deep enough impression for me to remember it whenever I recall the memory, so I will jump directly to the inspirations I get.
I think I got a strong sense of feeling that art is about telling stories. Not only in a visual way, but also about the atmosphere, the layout planning and also in paragraphs as well. I would like to say that the art I see today is like it\’s from the future, it leaves me with a strong visual impression as well as a spiritual one. I might not get the intension of the design from just looking at it, but there is a brochure explaining the idea behind each one of them. So after reading the line, I do find that I understand it more, and I could relate to it more. And the whole atmosphere, when so many art pieces of the same style are put together, I felt like I was let into the artist\’s inner world, the world her mind rest in. It is super immersive and feels wonderful.
It is an amazing exhibition! And an amazing experience!
But this contradicts what I learned from my design class. I think. What I\’ve learned is that good artwork doesn\’t need much verbal explanation to make people understand it. But I have to say that, the one I see today left people with a lot of space for imagination. Ummmm Think I know why.
In the initial stages of designing things, if we\’re doing something conceptual, we need words to let people know the whole story. But the artist\’s work will give people a basic impression first, and through some explanations, get some deeper understanding. Like, the words have to be a part of our work as a support, but for a work of art, the words are there to polish it and only make it better.
I only have very little understanding about art, really have to long way to go. On my way~
