The technology is evolving so fast, yet the development of the university\’s course is slow. There are many times I find myself studying some old antique that is totally meaningless.
Some people say that you don\’t really learn the techniques, you learn the way to think. I admit they do have a point, but the content makes the process so painful and so annoying.
Since everything is changing, more and more things we have studied are becoming out of date. And the university definitely failed to teach the students about some essential working skill set. Everything in the industry forces us to learn new things and study new technologies all the time. It is challenging, stressful, but also meaningful.
At least it is super meaningful to me. I\’m not the kind of person who likes to get paid to do repetitive things all the time, following some existing pattern and copying things from here to there. I like to be challenged, I like trying something new, I like the puzzles I can\’t solve, and I like the feeling of overcoming difficulties.
There\’s something new coming up everyday. Working in the trend, living in the trend, there is almost nowhere to hide, then just work well and live well.
While not practical, its important to learn how a machine became what it is today. That is how you gain a better perspective on one thing. The same thing applies to ancient languages and especially math.
Most of the math we learn in university or even in high-school are pre-18th century math. Have you seen modern math? Now imagine the difficulty of learning modern math without first having a general knowledge of older math.
Of course, you can learn something new without knowing its history first but that doesnt necessarily mean its the right way to learn something.
Thats why knowledge costs more than gold.
Yeah…. You make a great point! I admit that learning history is necessary because it is essential and modern technology was created on that basis. But the history is already the history, right? I think it would be better if the focus could be more up to date.
