Gosh! I am only on the second chapter and this book has made me so sad!
It introduces an assessment method that is called QALYs (Quality Adjusted Life Years) to determine who to save when you can\’t save both at the same time. To quote the line written in the book, \”to help make decisions about how to prioritize among the different health programs.\”
And it is making me so sad and depressed because, in about five pages, it clearly evaluated people\’s life values with exact numbers. It is such a cruel fact to know, and you know that you couldn\’t come up with anything against it because, sadly, it is so true.
And that is stressing me out! I was really impressed by what is mentioned at the beginning of the book, where they said that, in the case of helping people from poor countries, actions tiny to yourself could make a huge impact on improving their living conditions. BUT, when it comes to cold-blooded calculations on people\’s life values, I really couldn\’t keep on reading. And, my gosh, no matter how much I hate these calculations, I know that it is a must, and only through that, more valuable decisions could be made. And now, I am judging their life values myself, ohhhhhðŸ˜
Anyway, here\’s another quote from the book. We therefore need to make decisions about whom we choose to help, because failure to decide is the worst decision of all.
