In this fast developing society, it seems impossible to create something really big. Since the games we humans play get bigger and bigger, \”game changers\” are also meeting higher requirements.
It would be enormously difficult to create some invention like the light bulb, and the wheels that could make a huge difference to people\’s lives now. But the situation is also different in some ways. Many industries nowadays are not in the lack of technologies, but in the lack of operatable innovative ideas.
There are already a lot of existing systems, i.e. existing ideas, but these industries are stuck and finding it difficult to keep up with developments simply because they can\’t come up with something that will turn the industry around and rejuvenate what is traditional. It\’s the revolutionizing ideas that they have trouble finding.
To really make a difference, instead of improving the current operating system, find something that will change the future and create the new era. It\’s hard to get that spark of idea, but it would be operatable to turn ideas into reality. And then, enjoy the start of a new era you created yourself with your team. It\’s difficult, but it would be super meaningful, and it would be such a great achievement.
However, this only applies to some industries, and my insights are limited as well. Better stay humble, learn more, dream big, and eventually, do great things.
To me, most big ideas are already existing ideas but with a big twist. Since you mentioned video games ill give you one example.
Before 20+ years video games were popular and many companies were selling well. First person shooters were a great idea to sell a video game, it was something new back then. Couple years went by and a company named iD Software took that idea, that is a first person shooter, and gave it a different twist. What’s that twist you may ask? Make it 3D. So, they made Quake and it was a success. That was the whole selling point of that game, it was 3D. Again, same idea (FPS video game), different twist (3D).
You can see that in newer video games too. Why is Fortnite so popular? A better question would be: HOW did it become so popular? Its another video game, sure, but its also a battle royale, and THAT was a new twist when it first game out, among with other few similar video games. What do you know, for the next 3+ years every publisher was working on a battle royale game and Fortnite is still the king of the hill.
Your point of view is similar to mine. Yet, you explained it better and more clearly than I did. And, Metaverse thing just popped into my mind. I am very interested in your opinion on it. If you don’t mind me asking, do you see it as a big new idea, a twist, or something in-between? For me, Metaverse is a huge idea that will completely shift our lives, but the idea is very similar to Minecraft, which is an existing popular game. How would you define it? Any thoughts are welcome.
Are you specifically asking me about Zuckerberg’s Metaverse or the idea of metaverse itself, that is a 3D virtual world? I have to clarify because i have different opinions on both.
I’m asking about the general idea of metaverse. I would also love to hear your opinions on both.
(TLDR at the end.)
Well when it comes to the metaverse, i think people have this picture in their minds, where everyone is walking around their home with a VR headset on, day and night. This is what sells movies but its far from reality, its not practical and its not in our nature. We as humans thrived on socializing and will continue to do so even without a computer, because we need it.
The metaverse is already alive and people are into it daily without realising it. We shop online, we socialize and chat online, we work online. Using a VR headset to do all those mundane and simple tasks is simply forcing it and making those tasks way more complicated than they have to be. If you want to shop groceries or clothes in a 3D environment, you might aswell go to a mall.
On top of that, investing in a VR setup is a big move, these things are EXPENSIVE and they still need a bit maturing, meaning that your everyday consumer will not dare to think about having one. In the end we all know how projects like these end up if not done right (see Google glasses, Google Stadia, Xbox Kinect). All those projects were re-created ideas with a new twist but one that no one wanted/needed.
Zuckerberg’s Metaverse takes the cake for me. The results of that project speak themselves. Its the most ridiculous, badly designed and underdeveloped virtual world i’ve ever seen. Essentially, its a VR Chat wannabe. I think Zuckerberg has too much money he doesn’t know what to do with it.
I also think Metaverse was an attempt at making his own VR Chat that looks more “professional”. Ironically enough, it turned out to be the opposite. More specifically, Metaverse brought NOTHING new to the table. Everything Metaverse offered, had already been done before but better. I remember seeing Metaverse’s advertisment on YouTube and asking myself “why?”, like, we already have that.
Even it’s developers hate working on it.
TLDR:
We’re already in the metaverse thanks to the digitalisation of various activities such as shopping and socializing. Using a VR headset to do so, in my opinion, is unnecessary.
Zuckerberg’s Metaverse was expected to fail since it didnt fill up any space that was previously empty in the VR world.
I really enjoued your reply, than you for your time. I am impressed, and I agree with you. We do create things that appear to use more advanced technology, but completely ignore the actual needs of the market.
For Zuckerberg’s Metaverse. I took the Metaverse course offered by Meta really hoping to learn something, but it just felt like famous people trying to convince you to their ideas through their reputation.
Even it’s developers hate working on it.-LOL, no one wants to put effort into something they’re not committed to anyway.
